In 1963, while living in Italy, I won a silver medal in a pre-olympic relay race. I was asked to train for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. My guardians did not allow me to participate but I still consider myself a pre-"Olympian" athlete. Every Olympics I wear my medal and remember the team spirit, the competitions, the trainings and the fun we all had at the games. Thank you for represencing all of this for me.

All of the athletes are inspiring, moving and fun to watch. So much work and training goes into each sport and it is sad to see some of the athletes not get acknowledged with medal but to me they are all winners having been there!

I agree with Olympics being one things most people admire today. Something that most of us wants to experience in real life, being there and be a part of the social world displayed there.

I watch the Olympics every year its on and I cannot talk about Vancouver without talking about the fact that many people have gotten hurt such as in the down-hill skiing crashes and the ludge accident. Even before those games started we got to witness a safety problem when the ludge athlete from Georgia died. When accidents like this happends it is sad and I think many athletet, mostly the ludge athletes got affected by this. I have read in newspapers that athlete has complained over differnet problems they met while competing but I guess this is something that every Olympics have, parts that are not as well-grounded as others. The safety problem where the athlete from Georgia died, I think had a negative impact on the games from the beginning.

Otherwise I love watching the Olympics and love watching athletes motivation and passion for their sports. It is very inspirational! :)

I love everyone's comments. The part of the Olympics which resonates to me is resilience - the ability to pick one self up after falling down and even injuring one self and come back to triumph. Just coming back is triumphant - it doesn't matter whether or not they capture the gold. There is a wonderful energy which emanates from the Olympics this year and the focus is on overcoming struggles, doing a personal best and performing on the world's stage with grace and joy giving it all you've got. I also use the image of being an Olympic Champion on my health and fitness journey as a polio and post polio survivor.

I agree with you wholeheartedly Mike. This is global community in the making, and I wish it would happen ALL the time! Why not?
From playful competition in sporting events we could similarly televise, showcase a competition for green technology, enterprise and other service oriented endeavor. How about showcasing and teaching the spiritual practices and teachings of the world's great religions in a single olympic-like learning venue? COOPERATION is the flip side of competition, (just as responsibility becomes necessary with freedom) and should be showcased as well. Only in America and the western world has the cult of the individual become unbalanced in relation to the emphasis on service and contributions to others/society in the game of life--to a destructive degree I would add. Such endeavors would be a constructive use of the taxpayer dollars in our "defense" budget! Perhaps the newly forming Dept. of Peace could oversee them!

I too have enjoyed all the different aspects of the Olympics. More though, I find myself wanting to know more about those that don't make the medal podium. Our culture is so focused on winning, I often wish the coverage would spend more time with the other competitors and their stories. Don't get me wrong, winning is great and I love to win. NBC has covered a couple non-winning athletes, However, anyone who makes the olympic team deserves great props. Last night NBC did air a difficult but inspiring piece about Kevin Pearce, an olympic hopeful snow boarder who, while performing, suffered a traumatic brain injury just prior to the Olympics. They say he could have been a serious threat to Shaun White...he had beaten him in two previous competitions. Now I know about his wonderful family and their story. Kevin is a great example of inspiration and hope. Though this is a particularly tough story, it did get me to thinking about all the other competitor's and their stories. What did it take for them to get to the Olympics? Did they have to sacrafice or was it actually easy? What wisdom could I apply to my own life from hearing their stories? You are right Mike, there is much to be inspired about in watching the Olympics.
Great article!

I am so inspired by the athletes who, although they make a mistake which causes them to lose, smile when their turn is over. What an wonderful example of the importance of being a good athlete, not just a winner.

I live in Vancouver, and nightly, the main downtown streets are closed to vehicles and packed, curb to curb with people from around the world. (Often dressed in their country's colours.) The "Cultural Olympiad" that goes on throughout the games is showcasing the cultures from around the world and it's completely FANTASTIC. The mood in downtown Vancouver in electrifying. Fireworks every night . . . bands playing at multiple venues, and people just generally enjoying walking amongst one another and being part of it. The events have been incredible too (you would not believe how fast the bobsleigh is up close!) . . . but there's just something so magical about the multitudes of people that make up the energy of this event. Totally amazing!
